Profiles in Courage: HECTOR

Guys, this is HECTOR:

HECTOR, these are the guys.

Springing forth from the mind of Kurt Busiek and the pencil of Paul Smith, he is undoubtedly, despite showing up on a grand total of two pages (and a cover) in his career as a super-villain, one of the greatest comic book characters of all time. He made his first and only appearance in the pages of Iron Lantern, one of the offerings from the Amalgam crossover, a little mashup that combined DC and Marvel characters--in this case, Iron Man and Green Lantern.

But while "Hal Stark" spends the majority of the issue fighting a giant shark-man in space, the story opens with him dealing with a combination of Green Lantern foe and recently lobotomized punching bag Hector Hammond, and, of course, MODOK.

The Highly Evolved Creature Totally Oriented on Revenge.

I defy you to tell me that's not awesome.

Yeah, it's almost but I don't get the profile in courage part. What does that mean?

"Profiles in Courage" is one of the headings I use, like Dollar Comic Reviews, Where They Went Wrong, or The Crank File, to denote the content of a post and make it easier to come up with a title.

Profiles in Courage began with my piece on The Vagabond and continued with The Tiger-Man, and they're designed to highlight those little-known characters that toil away being ridiculous, awesome, and ridiculously awesome to make comics better.

This one was a bit truncated, though, because I was really sleepy.

I love the "Totally" part of HECTOR's name. It makes me imagine he talks like Keanu Reeves.

As long as HECTOR doesn't totally suck, I think you win.

The new design looks better to me than the original MODOK. Something about the weird face-crags (MODOK ought to take a day off and get Botox).

Plus, the acronym is even better.
