ROM was one of my favorite comics back then.
The Dire Wraiths were the most bad-ass aliens ever, and then they were killed off by the female of their species who were EVEN MORE badass.
Stupidly, I never even knew it was based on a toy.

I've been picking up ROM issues for the past 5 years now whenever they pop up at me. I am so close. Just a few more issues and I have them all!
The stories are fantastic and packed to the brim with violence and murder.
Even the annual has nipples on the cover.

I read perhaps the first 40 issues of ROM when it was being published. Loved it (along with Mantlo's Micronauts). However, I don't remember if they ever told exactly why ROM plunged into the earth like a giant asteroid on his first arrival. Was that ever explained?

Wait, Ditko drew Rom? Probably would be mediocre crap like everything else Ditko did for Marvel in the 80's, but wouldn't it be great if it had Rom lecturing the Dire Wraiths about Objectivism while fucking their shit up?

Snazzy Steve drew Rom from issue #58-59 thereabouts all the way to its end. During that run he was inked by Bob Layton, Tom Palmer, Jackson Guice, John Byrne, and P. Craig Russell. The Russell issues are beautiful.
Funny story: in one issue a big group of heroes is shown with Spider-Man in the background. Sure, it was a static shot, but readers wrote in saying, "wow, it took 20 years, but Steve Ditko finally drew Spider-Man again!" Marvel said in the letter cloumn that it was Guice who drew it.
A couple of years ago I gave that issue to Guice to sign at a con, and asked him about that, and he smiled and said, "Steve left the outline of a figure... and after a few minutes of looking at the page I knew who was supposed to be there."

While reading a friends copy of the latest issue of CIVIL WAR, I'm pretty sure saw mention of a team of Space Knights patrolling the Midwest as part of the Super Hero Initiative thimgamajig.
Was the issue so bad that I hallucinated that part to make the story less crappy?

ROM was one of my very first comic books - I loved it as a kid and had every issue for a while.
Ditko, as great as he was in the 60's, was NOT the right artist for ROM.
I've gone back and gotten a few of the old issues for nostalgia sake and boy they have not stood the test of time! I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread as a kid, now I see they're mostly cheese.
Still, I have great affection for ROM, Brandy, Starshine, Terminator, the Wraiths, Hybrid, Firefall (the original of whom I thought was real cool), Hellhounds of the Dark Nebula, and much of the other craziness.
I thought Javelin and Hammerhand were some of the coolest other spaceknights. In later life I came out as gay. Hmmmm...

I loved the issues where Buscema was inked by the tag team of Ian Akin and Brian Garvey and Rom met people like the In-Betweener and Brynocki from Mordillo's Island. That Mantlo magic is what's missing from many of Marvel's comics today.

Unfortunately, it looks like Ditko didn't do any covers even while he had the run of the comic -- including a P. Craig Russell-inked issue where Rom fights Ego, the Living Planet -- but there are darn nifty Sienkiewicz covers for the opening issues of the "Total War" sequence... Ah, the days when you could get Sienkiewicz to do covers for TOY TIE-INS.

Ahh, Rom, Spaceknight-truly the most underrated comic of the 80s, Bill Mantlo's masterpiece. The early issues where Rom was just walking up to people who were disguised as Dire Wariths and zapping them into Limbo, looking like he was a murderer were awesome; given its origins as a toy tie in the book wound up being pretty brutal in terms of violence and what it did to the supporting cast, and how can you go wrong with a book drawn by Sal Buscema and Steve Dikto?
I'd give anything for Marvel to get the rights back and reprint Rom, it was truly awesome.

Starriors #3 for the win.
Strangely, I've been trying to remember what those toys were called for months, but until someone mentioned Sienkiewicz and toy tie-in covers, the memory was locked up tight. Brains are freaky.
