Where Is ROM's Money?!

From the pages of the now-classic Power Man and Iron Fist #73, we find out what happens when some mark-ass trick tries to hold out on a Spaceknight:

As you might expect, there can be only one outcome to these shennanigans:

Why it got to be so hard for a brother from Galador to get over in the game?

That's what's up. ROM: Spacepimp may have a mighty pimp hand ("Don't neutralize me, Daddy!"), but if you brings that mess into Times Square, Dan "The Man" Rand will kick you so hard your line of action figures will get cancelled.

OK, I give.

WHY did ROM shoot her? (I realize this is not the point.)

John Holbo - Dude, you are so missing out on much of the coolness of this blog if you don't hover your pointer over the pictures and read the captions.

He's shooting her because she's a Dire Wraith. Plus ROM don't take no shit from no 'ho.

It's things like this which allow me to say (without any sarcasm or irony) that "Power Man & Iron Fist" was one of the greatest comics ever published. I'm about 2/3rds done collecting the whole run, and ever searching for more!

Luke - you are 100% right. That book is everything that was good about the 70s genre. You are a better man than me though, as I am waiting for the Essentials.

On a side note, you have no idea the sheer amount of happiness I have gained from playing with Luke Cage in Marvel Ultimate Allance. The Power Man grabs a Ultron robot and punches it in the face. I yell "break yo' self fool!" and my wife wonders why I'm talking to the TV. Then, I get his new power where he takes off his chain belt and beats a fool. It was euphoria.

jholbo: That's no lady of the night, she's actually a Dire Wraith, one of your standard-issue 100% evil alien races, a fact that made it okay for ROM and the rest of the Spaceknights to totally drop some genocide on them.

They come to earth and take the place of regular citizens, so ROM shows up and blasts them with his Neutralizer, which sends them to Limbo, but makes it look like he's just walking around murdering random people.

As to why a Dire Wraith came to earth and decided to pose as a Lower Manhattan hooker until the invasion launched, I have no idea.

What makes the disguise as a hooker more disturbing is the fact that we later learned that all the Dire Wraiths we'd been seeing were *males*. The Dire Wraith version of 'The Crying Game' is definitely NC-17.

So, we had Powerman make a comeback in recent years (body guard, Jungle Fever in ALias and Pulse, etc.) highlighted by the only non-overblown (and by far the most coherent in-character) reaction to Civil War (honestly, my favorite issue of this whole event other than the Cap'n and Spidey beatdwon of Iron Man i can only assume is coming at some point) I gotta ask when's Iron Fist making his glorious return (not in random cameo fashion either).

Rom may hit yah, but you KNOW he loves ya, baby.

Dire Wraiths really had a random way of infiltrating human society. And why were they so American-centric?

I have a Rom Annual that features a tale of the past, featuring Rom and the spaceknight... Gloriole.

Say that name again. Out loud. Slowly.

Iron Fist has returned in Brubaker's Daredevil, where he pretended to be DD so as to keep Hell's Kitchen/NY safe, but he didn't use the billy club thingies DD does and... ouch. I think he's also guesting in the current Heroes for Hire.

Are there any noteworthy compilations/collections of Rom the SpaceKnight or Power Man & Iron Fist in print at the moment? Enlighten me. I'm afraid I am unable to track any back issues where I live.

And please, more posts on ROM.

I highly recommend the Essential Luke Cage, Power Man volumes. I'm working my way through the first one, and it's actually pretty damn good. A lot (okay, most) of the dialogue is amazingly awful, but they're good adventure stories. And back then you got 15-20 minutes of reading material for your 20 cents, which is a nice change from $3 for 5 minutes (COUGH COUGH Planetary COUGH COUGH)
