This is such an awesome story. I pulled it out of storage a few months ago and read it three times in one week. Such great eye candy. Granted, I then tried to sell it on eBay (I really needed the cash), but got no takers, obviously, this was meant to stay in my collection. I wish Marvel would collect a lot of this stuff from Marvel Fanfare, there's a lot of hidden gems from that series.

Dare I ask why Volstagg has a goat with him?

And is it a boy goat or a girl goat?

Fandral: "...like the Viking Dolemite."

Only a lot less sweaty.

I mean, Rudy Ray Moore is great and all, but that man could perspire, you know? Especially when making his sweet, sweet love...

Ohhh, Thor. I had SUCH a crush on him when I was naught but a lass of fifteen. *sigh*

I do hope that they resurrect the Warriors Three, when Thor comes back. Oh heck, bring back Odin too. He can always go to sleep when things start getting rough.

No argument from me on the Utter, Mind-Shattering Awesomeness of the Warriors Three. I always thought they needed more face-time.

Part of my long-standing love of Walt Simonson came from his re-casting of Volstagg. The blustering, clueless buffoon of the Kirby-Lee era was replaced by a highly intelligent, cunning, fun-loving man who acted like a buffoon because (a) it fooled his enemies and (b) it was a hell of a lot of fun. Simonson's Volstagg kicked much villainous ass. He was the Round Mound of Throwdown.

As a spheroid man and a parent, I myself treasure the image of the planetoidal warrior adventuring across the Eternal Realm whilst carrying his granddaughter on his chest in some sort of Asgardian Baby Bjorn.

Volstagg as Kickass Viking Grandpa Santa?

Rawk! (Insert sound of wailing guitar here.)

I have a theory that Hogun the Grim is not unlike that Chuck Norris fellow everyone was going on about. Thus, he should be rarely seen, because he's always doing something so awesome it would make all other mortal and godly pursuits seem pallid and colorless. Don't show Hogun, show the devastation where he's been.

For a second there, I was trying to recall a single panel of Thor where Loki's in the same zip code as Hogun. Loki's not stupid.

Funny, I just reread Thor: Blood Oath last night and came to this same conclusion. The Warriors Three are in fact: badass.

Mr. Jerkwater, you're right about Simonson. He's the only writer who understood that Vollstag is FALSTAFF, not frickin' Ralph Kramden.

Fuck, if that's the case, I'm perfectly happy being a poor man. They're both amazing, and I'll gladly ogle artwork from either one.

Ever read Thor: Blood Oath? It's a fantastic thing involving some serious, and some not so serious Warriors Three Badassitude.

Another Volstagg fan here. Grim loners and pipe-laying prettyboys are a dime a dozen in comics, but a man of girth that brings the pain in a godlike manner is something special indeed. And despite what Dave, Son Of Gary, says, Volstagg is comics ultimate layer of smack. Sure, you see a big muscle-y guy with a freakin' hammer and he says he's about to wail on you, you'd be nervous. But a big ol' fat dude? Talking that much shit? Bah, you can take him, distract him with a porkchop or something, and then BAM! The Lion Of Asgard, baby.

And he's a family man, which is kind of cool. Hoss has like two dozen kids, too. He's the Solomon Burke of Asgard.

TwilightCorps: You're asking if I've read a mini-series where Hogun the Grim hits someone with a car in order to get a spear that must be kept in a cauldron of blood lest its fury overwhelm the whole room.

Answer: Yes.

Haole: Because what that bush covers was not Code-Approved. Fandral-Style!

I don't know if you are familiare withe Peter Madsens Valhalla. I know that that some of serie have been translated to English. In Odins Wager we get introduced to the The Warriors Three, sort of.

I grew up with Peter Madsens Valhalla, so when I stumbled over Marvels Thor, it felt very strange. In the same way, that many would feel if they saw Batman with a machine gun.

When I die, I want to be able to go out on the Vahalla town with the Warriors Three.

In fact, they should be available on the National Health Service, to prevent depression, despondancy and general post-Civil War moopiness.

Gotta second lakrids' props for Peter Madsen's Valhalla, it's very good comics - not as patently awesome as Simonson's Thor, but very very good nonetheless.

And, there's a Wikipedia entry for the album lakrids referenced, which has some interesting facts (look under "Album Titles and Summaries"). One correction, though, Marvel took the concept and names of the Warriors Three from the Norse myths (but not the fact that they were Thor, Balder and Loki in disguise), and Peter Madsen in turn homaged the Marvel designs for the characters in his comic.
