Fuckin' A right, he's punchin' out lions.

Also, his 'primal defense reactions' include JIVE TALK ABOUT HARE KRISHNAS.

This is the happiest birthday I've ever had.

Bendis' man crush begins to make more sense. Of course Cage doesn't seem to beat up on people as much of late...

Hey, I love the blog. You know, I'm sure you're going to hate hearing this, but Iron Fist (and anybody else in comics using martial arts) isn't actually practicing 'kung fu.' Well, he is, but that's not a fighting style. He's a master of 'wushu,'the chinese term for martial arts.

Kung fu, or 'gong fu' as it's more accurately pronounced, translates to a skill that transcends surface beauty, something with pure grace and power. For instance, a martial artist who's technique "is decorative and without real power has no 'gong fu'." Thus, calligraphy has kung fu, dance, painting, sculpting, anything that evinces a deeper inherent understandig and strength. Not to rain on your parade or anything, I know your not going to change terminology or anything, but you seemed interested.

Luke Cage is punching out lions - one of whom, in the first panel, is shooting a gun at him because teeth, claws, and feline reflexes are wholly insufficient.

Hot damn.

Hold on, that dialogue in the first panel- are those man-lions yelling that at Luke Cage?

The first panel is Luke Cage not only fighting large jungle cats, but Lionfang, who controls large jungle cats (the one shooting the gun at him).

The Hero For Hire was badass before badass was cool.

Oh for heaven's sake. First Batman and now Luke Cage. What is WITH these boys punching out the wildlife? I remember when they actually used to punch the VILLAINS!

bosswald: Kung fu, or 'gong fu' as it's more accurately pronounced, translates to a skill that transcends surface beauty, something with pure grace and power.

I think "kung-fu" has also taken on an English vernacular loan meaning beyond the literal one. It's a lot more in line with the movie-style flashy ass-kicking with a veneer of pseudo-philosophizing about the nature of humanity. While you're kicking their asses. I can't think of any other loan words like that off the top of my head, though.

It's also a nice all-purpose suffix for skill at something. "My Photoshop-fu is weak" or "His C++-fu is more powerful than mine." I appropriated it for "check-fu," which is the ancient Asian art of fighting over who will pick up the check at dinner, with the winner being the one who gets to pay so you look good to your friends and relations. Those who have witnessed a battle of check-fu know exactly what I'm talking about.

Not that anybody looked interested at all, of course.

Well, I thought bosswald's info was interesting, in that "file it away to mention to a friend who's into martial arts" kind of way.

So it's interesting, but not as interesting as Luke Cage punching cats.

But then again, few things are.

You definitely get the impression by Luke's comments that he's used to hearing about "animal cruelty". Why, you'd almost think he made punching out cats a hobby!

Smells like somebody's been dipping into the Essential Luke Cage vol. 1. 'Bout time.

By the way, the Essential Luke Cage volume 1 is easily the greatest collection of stories about being awesome in all of time and space.

Well, damn me for figuring that since roughly half if not more of the blog revolves around the awesomeness of Kung-fu and kicking ass, people would be interested in knowing more about the history of it. I mean jeez, there was that whole post about the Count Dante, deadliest man alive. not to mention the previous post about iron fist, or the post talking about kung-fu before that, or the one before that... See where I'm going here? But please, I apologize for attempting to bring something new and interesting to the conversation.

For the record: I'm in complete agreement with Edward Liu on th evolution of the word in the english language. Still doesn't hurt to know the roots.
